The Chinese Lunar New Year is arriving soon, and with it comes new releases marking The Year of The Horse. Cuban cigar distributor Habanos S.A. has chosen the Trinidad brand for the celebration and introduced the Trinidad Corcel this past weekend in Hong Kong at a premiere party held in conjunction with regional distributor Pacific Cigar Co. Ltd.

Referred to as “Patricios” in Cuban cigar factories, the Trinidad Corcel measures 5 3/8 inches long by 55 ring gauge and comes in decorative 18-count boxes themed to Lunar New Year. Each box incorporates NFC technology to not only provide product information but to also help guarantee authenticity. Only 8,888 boxes are being produced, a number that’s not coincidental, as in Chinese culture the number eight is considered quite lucky.

Although prices will vary from country to country, Habanos S.A. announced that the cigars should retail for 78 euros apiece, or just over 1,405 euros per box. At current conversion rates, that works out to about $84.25 per cigar or $1,516 a box.

Dag Holmboe, CEO of Pacific Cigar, was present for the launch event. “It is a great honor to welcome you to the global launch of our latest addition to the Trinidad family: Trinidad Corcel, a celebration commemorating the Year of the Horse,” he said. “Today, we are representing not only Habanos’ excellence, but also paying tribute to a rich cultural tradition, steeped in heritage and values. The Year of the Horse symbolizes strength, freedom, and endurance, qualities that Trinidad has embodied throughout its history, and Corcel is no exception.”

Trinidad

The Trinidad Corcel is the seventh premium Cuban cigar themed to the Chinese zodiac, joining the Partagás Cedros (Year of the Snake); Montecristo Brillantes (Year of the Dragon); Cohiba Siglo de Oro (Year of the Rabbit); H. Upmann Magnum 52 (Year of the Tiger); Hoyo de Monterrey Primaveras (Year of the Ox); and Romeo y Julieta Maravillas 8 (Year of the Rat).

Now that the new Trinidad has been released in Hong Kong, it will appear in other global markets throughout the year, although Habanos has given no exact release dates for any regions.
