Revival of a brand originally rolled by the company back in 1900

J.C. Newman Cigar Co. has begun shipping Sarzedas, a new version of a very old brand the company first made in 1900, 125 years ago.

Sarzedas were previewed at the PCA Trade Show earlier this year. Drew Newman, one of the owners of J.C. Newman, proclaimed it “the most flavorful cigar we have ever made.”

Sarzedas

Sarzedas—which was marketed as “The Aromatic Cigar” a century ago, comes in four, fairly traditional sizes: Toro (6 inches long by 50 ring); Robusto (4 3/4 by 52); Churchill (7 by 48) and Corona (5 1/2 by 43). Suggested retail prices range from $7.75 to $10 per cigar.

Blended by Rich Dolak, J.C. Newman’s vice president of operations, the cigars are made using a combination of light Ecuadoran wrappers and a mix of Nicaraguan and Dominican binder and filler tobaccos. The new smokes are rolled by hand in Nicaragua at J.C. Newman’s PENSA factory in the cigarmaking town of Estelí, which the company opened in 2011. Brick House is one of the brands J.C. Newman makes there as well.

Sarzedas

“Sarzedas is a fun cigar that I have been wanting to bring back for years,” Drew Newman told Cigar Aficionado. “Reintroducing Sarzedas is very exciting for us because it is the first new brand we have launched in a decade.”

The cigar was originally due to be out in the summer, but packaging delays pushed back the release date. “The Sarzedas cigars have been ready, but we wanted the packaging to be unique and authentic, tying back to the 125-year history of the brand,” says Newman. “Unfortunately, it took us longer to get the packing right.”

Look for a vertical brand tasting in a future issue of Cigar Insider.
