Thirty years ago, nobody in the cigar industry knew who Rocky Patel was. He walked away from a job as an entertainment lawyer and decided to reinvent himself. Today, Patel is one of the most well-known people in the cigar world. To celebrate three decades of toil and success, the Cigar Aficionado Hall-of-Famer created the Rocky Patel Thirtieth Anniversary, a three-size line of box-pressed cigars rolled with well-aged tobaccos. The new cigars were previewed at the PCA trade show in April and begin shipping out to retailers on Monday.

The anniversary smokes are dark and box-pressed, rolled with wrappers grown in Mexico’s San Andrés Valley. There are two binders from Nicaragua, leaves that the company says have more than seven years of age. Underneath is a filler blend of Honduran and Nicaraguan tobaccos, aged more than five years. The line is intended to be medium-to-full in body, and consists of a Robusto (5 1/2 inches by 50 ring gauge, $18), a Toro (6 1/2 by 52, $19) and a Sixty (6 by 60, $20). All sizes come in 20-count boxes.

There’s also a limited-edition Toro with even older tobaccos. Each Toro comes in its own rectangular tubo and has a suggested retail price of $47.50 apiece. They’re packaged in 10-count boxes. Only 1,000 boxes will be released. Both the regular-production and limited-edition cigars are made at Patel’s Tavicusa factory in Nicaragua.
