Mr. Punch Gets Its Own Punch Line
A cigar mascot now has a brand of his own. Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG), which owns and produces the non-Cuban version of Punch, is feting the brand with a new cigar that shines the spotlight on Mr. Punch, the clownish character (of Punch and Judy fame) that’s brought a droll touch to the Punch line for more than a century. Fittingly called Mr. Punch by Punch, the cigars are shipping to retailers today.
“Mr. Punch is a true icon not just in the cigar industry, but in pop culture,” said Punch brand manager Scott Abney. “So, it only made sense to create a cigar that captures his spirit. This new blend delivers a classic Punch smoking experience with a flavor profile tailored to the modern consumer.”
Made in Nicaragua at the STG Estelí factory, the blend for Mr. Punch by Punch consists of an Ecuador Sumatra wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder grown in Jalapa and Nicaraguan filler. As the line is intended to appeal to modern tastes, all of the sizes in the line are quite hefty but remain competitively priced—a welcome sight as cigar prices continue to climb. Mr. Punch is available in three sizes: Toro, measuring 6 inches by 54 ring gauge ($7.89); Gigante, 6 by 60 ($8.99); and the mammoth The Big Slapper, 7 by 70 ($10.09). All three sizes are packaged in 20-count boxes
Like all non-Cuban Punch brands, Mr. Punch by Punch is distributed by Forged Cigar Co., a subsidiary of STG.
