Gemmologists and jewelers know that blue amber is a fossilized resin brilliantly hued by the chemical compound perylene. It occurs naturally and most of it can be found in the Dominican Republic. It’s also the newest line of Aging Room cigars. The Aging Room Blue Amber celebrates the brand’s 15th anniversary. Although the cigars are made in Nicaragua, the blend contains some Dominican tobacco, playing off the theme of blue amber and its origin.

Aging Room

According to Rafael Nodal, owner of the Aging Room brand and vice president of product capability for Tabacalera USA (which distributes Aging Room), blue amber can be found in the Cordillera Septentrional mountains of the Dominican Republic. He says that some of the tobaccos in the blend were grown near Las Cumbres on the same mountain range where the amber is mined. The area overlooks the Cibao Valley, one of the most important tobacco-growing regions of the Dominican Republic.

Nodal knows that the cool mountain air and mineral-rich soils of this area won’t make the tobacco blue, but he believes it does impact the character of the tobacco in a meaningful way.

“The tobaccos used in this blend come from fields nestled in the Cordillera Septentrional mountain range near Las Cumbres—just steps away from where the blue amber stone is found,” Nodal says. “This connection is more than symbolic, it’s literal. The same earth that forms the gem also nourishes the leaves, infusing them with a distinctive mineral essence with refined complexity and a perfectly harmonious symphony of flavors.”

Like many Aging Room cigars, Blue Amber is made in Nicaragua by A.J. Fernandez. It’s composed of a Nicaraguan wrapper grown by Fernandez, a Dominican binder and a filler combination of Nicaraguan tobacco and Dominican leaf—the cigar’s defining component grown in the vicinity of the blue amber mines.

The upcoming line will come in four sizes: Blue Celestar, measuring 5 inches by 58 ring gauge ($40); Blue Maestro, a 6-by-52 torpedo ($41); a 6-by-60 called Blue Sky ($43); and Blue Turquoise, a double-tapered perfecto that measures 6 by 60 at its fattest point ($43). All come in blue boxes of 20, each sided with brass for stunning contrast.

As a companion to this anniversary edition, there will also be a timepiece from British manufacturer Dennison Watches. Each watch features a dial made of blue amber sourced from the same Dominican region that inspired the cigar. An Aging Room logo can be found on the back. Only 225 are being produced and each will have a suggested retail price of $1,000.

The Aging Room Blue Amber will be previewed tomorrow in the Dominican Republic at the Tobacconists’ Association of America (TAA) trade show, but the cigar is not scheduled to hit the market until December.
