S.T. Dupont Line D Fire-head Guilloche Pens
You reach into your jacket for a pen and all eyes dart to it. This one’s a head turner. Not every writing instrument has the panache of the new S.T. Dupont Line D Fire-head Guilloche, a luxury pen adorned with precious metal trim.
Underneath layers of natural lacquer (your choice of amber, emerald or amethyst) each pen is engraved with an intricate triangular pattern the company calls Fire-head. The guilloche (precise engine-turned engraving) pays tribute to a design seen on many vintage S.T. Dupont pens and lighters, called Diamond Head. The triangular motif also draws inspiration from the glass pyramid entrance of the Louvre museum in Paris, even while the pens are made exclusively for the United States market.
The pen’s combination of guilloche and brightly hued, natural lacquer reminds one of holding a precious stone. When the light catches the writing instrument, it shimmers in the hand. Made with a core of solid brass, it also exhibits a reassuring heft.
Yet for all its outward splendor, the Fire-head Guilloche is a smooth writer, racing down the page like rainwater on a glass pane. But with its gleaming curves and tapers, the eyes are continually drawn back to the pen, reminding the user to slow down and appreciate the act of writing.
Crafted in the company’s workshop near the French Alps, the instruments are available in rollerball and fountain pen formats. The rollerballs are priced at $875 and the fountain pen variants cost $995. The fountain pen models can accept ink cartridges or, using a piston converter, bottled ink. They’re equipped with a 14-karat, solid-yellow-gold nib in extra fine, fine, medium or broad widths. The amber and emerald models feature yellow-gold vermeil trim. The amethyst model comes with palladium trim.
