S.T. Dupont Defi Windproof Lighters
Torch lighters blast away with considerable power, creating flames that are tough enough to withstand a good breeze. Soft flame lighters are more delicate, good for lighting up inside but not so handy when the wind blows. The S.T. Dupont Defi Windproof line comprises three lighters that cleverly incorporate a bit of both—they throw what looks and acts like a soft flame, but are bolstered by a jet torch that comes from deep inside, creating flames that are tough enough to stay lit even in a strong breeze.
The torch looks much like a soft flame until you look closer. Stare down the circular port where the flame originates—it’s a deep hole, which looks a bit like staring into a jet engine. The powerful jet comes from within, ignited about a half inch down from the surface of the lighter. The opening is in turn festooned with six miniports around the circle from which the lighter’s fire comes forth. At the click of ignition, the lighter ignites all flames simultaneously. What emerges has the appearance of a soft flame, but boasts the wind resistance of a torch lighter. After your cigar is lit, you might find yourself spending a few moments puffing away like the Big Bad Wolf as you try to put the flame out. It takes that much effort.
The Defi Windproof, which is made in China, is also considerably quieter than most torches, operating with a slight hiss rather than the searing sound found in other such lighters.
The Defi Windproof comes in three metal finishes—chrome, black and copper—all of which are protected by rubberized resin bumpers. Each has a suggested retail price of $395.
