Pepin Garcia Adding Extra Fat Cigars
José “Pepin” Garcia is adding new sizes to some of his existing lines, and each is considerably fat, reflecting the trend of American smokers gravitating toward ever-thicker cigars.
The Don Pepin Garcia “Blue Label” brand, which is rolled in the tiny El Rey de Los Habanos factory in Miami, Florida, on historic Calle Ocho, now has a size called the Toro Gordo. The six inch long, 56 ring gauge shape is a first for Garcia, and the only cigar in his considerable and ever-growing portfolio to have those dimensions. The cigar began shipping last week.
The Don Pepin Blue Label is made from a blend of all Nicaraguan tobaccos. The Toro Gordos come in boxes of 18 cigars, and each smoke has a suggested retail price of $6.70.
Fatter still is the newest shape for the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial brand. The Super Gordo measures a whopping 66 ring gauge, and is 5 3/4 inches long. To allow cigar lovers to cram their jaws around the massive smoke, the Garcias have made this cigar with a belicoso tip.
The cigar, like all Jaime Garcia Reserva Especiales, is made in Nicaragua with a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper and a Nicaraguan filler and binder. It’s the first new size of the line since its launch last year—and it’s the fattest by far—bringing the number of sizes in the brand to six.
