Not much is known about the OneOff Black & Tan blend, and that’s just how Illusione wants it. The mysterious cigar made a splash last year when the Robusto debuted—and it even landed on our Top 25 list. Now, there’s a second size, Toro, heading to retailers.

OneOff has a long, interrupted and somewhat complex history. It was created in 2001 by Italian retailer Andrea Molinari, but the brand ceased operation for a while. At one point, OneOff ended up in the hands of Cuban Crafters, a company known for manufacturing value-priced cigars. The brand was resurrected and reimagined by Illusione company owner Dion Giolito, who brought his version of OneOff back to the market in 2018 after he purchased the trademark and put the previously defunct cigars back into production. Once Giolito acquired the brand from Cuban Crafters in 2017, he started making OneOffs of his own the next year. Since then, Giolito has expanded OneOff to include not only the core line, but spinoffs such as the Allegria series and Black & Tan.

The new Black & Tan Toro was previewed at the PCA trade show in New Orleans earlier this year. It measures 6 inches by 52 ring gauge, comes in a 10-count box and has a retail price of $17.80 per cigar. Like the Robusto, the Toro is made in Nicaragua at Aganorsa Leaf, a company that not only has its own factory but is also one of the largest growers of premium tobacco in Nicaragua.

Giolito won’t divulge too many specifics about the blend. He says the cigar is entirely Nicaraguan, all of the tobacco grown by Aganorsa Leaf, and includes an unusual varietal not typically cultivated. As for what that varietal is, he’s just not saying.
