New 107 Zeppelin Perfectos Coming To U.S. From La Aurora
The Dominican company that rolled its first perfectos more than 100 years ago has added a new one to its portfolio, and it will be coming to the United States this summer.
La Aurora S.A., makers of the Preferidos series of bomb-shaped perfectos, has come out with a new perfecto called the La Aurora 107 Zeppelin. Squat and fat and tapered at both the head and foot, the cigars measure a mere 4-inches long with a portly 58 ring gauge at their fattest point.
The dark smokes are cloaked in Ecuadoran Sumatra wrappers, with Dominican binders and a four-country filler blend containing leaves from Brazil, Nicaragua, Peru and the Dominican Republic, where the cigars are rolled. They come 20 to the box, and are finished with tightly coiled pigtails at the head.
La Aurora took the unusual step of launching this smoke in international markets before the U.S. and has been doing a gradual rollout. They went on sale in China in November, and then in January they hit stores in Europe. La Aurora plans to unveil the cigar for the U.S. market in late-June at the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailer trade show in Las Vegas. When the cigars are released in the United States, they will carry a retail price of $9.
No stranger to perfectos, La Aurora is the maker of the Preferidos, which is a bigger cigar than the Zeppelin with a far more pointed head. The Preferidos was the first size rolled by La Aurora when the company began making cigars in the Dominican Republic back in 1903 and is the nation’s oldest cigarmaker.
La Aurora brought the size back in 1999, originally with wrappers grown in Cameroon. The popularity of the size—Preferidos measure 5 by 54—led to the expansion of the line, with versions rolled in wrappers from the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Connecticut (both shade and broadleaf).
