The Macanudo with a Brazilian wrapper has returned, but it isn’t made with the dark tobacco you might think. When a cigar’s wrapper is described as “shade-grown,” the Connecticut River Valley normally comes to mind. General Cigar Co. is re-releasing a limited-edition version of its Macanudo Inspirado brand but these shade-grown wrappers come from Brazil’s Bahia region, and are lighter than typical Brazilian cover leaf. Originally released in 2021, Macanudo Inspirado Brazilian Shade is back and ships to retailers this week.

Underneath the Connecticut-seed Brazilian wrapper is a Mexican San Andrés binder holding together a mix of fillers from Brazil, Nicaragua’s Jalapa region and the Dominican Republic. According to the company, the Dominican tobacco is Piloto Cubano, along with a proprietary leaf General refers to as Dominican Cubita, a Cuban-seed varietal that is grown on a one-acre plot in the Mao region.

Intended to be medium in body, the cigars are available in two sizes, a Toro and a Churchill. The Toro is 6 1/2 inches by 52 ring and retails for $10.99, while the Churchill is 7 by 48 with a suggested retail price of $11.99. Both sizes come in brightly-colored boxes of 10 that are intended to evoke Brazil’s flag. Production is limited to 2,100 boxes of the Toro and 1,200 of the Churchill.

Macanudo Inspirado Brazilian Shade is produced in the Dominican Republic at the General Cigar Dominicana factory in Santiago.
