Central America celebrates its 200th year of independence from the Spanish empire in 2021, so it seems fitting that Nicaragua’s oldest cigar company is relishing in the event with a special smoke. Joya de Nicaragua will commemorate the bicentennial with a one-time release of Dos Cientos, “two hundred” in English, as well as a virtual smoking event in September for those who purchased a box.

Joya will release 2,000 21-count boxes of the Dos Cientos in August. The toros measure 6 inches by 54 ring gauge, they are made with a multi-country blend and they are intended to be medium bodied. One cigar in every box will come wrapped in paper, denoting the cigar that’s meant to be smoked during the virtual bicentennial party. The Dos Ciento joins the Cinco Decadas, Cuatro Cinco and Número Uno as part of the brand’s Obras Maestras (“masterpieces”) family.

“The leaf’s role in the development of our culture and our society has been fundamental,” says Joya de Nicaragua’s owner, Dr. Alejandro Martinez-Cuenca. “Tobacco was ever present as we created our own economic, political and cultural identities…We want to celebrate that achievement of our own birth as a country and as a region, so we’re showcasing tobaccos from different American countries—Nicaragua, Honduras, Mexico, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic.”

Based in Estelí, the company has been around since 1968. “For us there is always a link between the past and the present,” says Juan Ignacio Martinez, president of Joya de Nicaragua. “We are who we are today because of the decisions that were made hundreds of years ago. Dos Cientos pays tribute to those 200 years and who we are today as the leading cigar-producing country and region in the world.”
