Joya de Nicaragua Resurrects Antaño Gran Reserva

A Joya de Nicaragua brand from the past will soon be returning to store shelves—only this time it's positioned as a regular-production offering. Once a limited-edition cigar from 2005, the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Gran Reserva will be arriving at retailers again this August, after it makes its formal re-introduction at the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers trade show next week.

"The original Gran Reserva was introduced in 2005 as a limited-edition," Juan Martinez, executive president of Joya de Nicaragua, told Cigar Aficionado.

Antaño Gran Reserva is an offshoot of the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970, a Nicaraguan puro that debuted in 2002. Gran Reserva keeps the blend of the 1970 but replaces the filler tobacco with older Nicaraguan leaf. According to the company, the tobacco leaves have been aged for up to five years.

Hit & Run will come packaged in 10-count boxes and offered in five sizes: 46x6, 54x6, 52x43/4, 50x6 (piramide) and 60x51/8 (perfecto).
Antaño Gran Reserva, from left: Belicoso, at 6 inches by 54 ring ($10.75); Robusto Grande, at 5 1/2 by 52 ($9.50); and Gran Cónsul, 4 3/4 by 60 ($10.00).

"[Inside] the new Gran Reserva, all of the fillers are vintage, all-Nicaraguan tobacco." Martinez said.

Antaño Gran Reserva will return in its three original sizes: Belicoso, at 6 inches by 54 ring ($10.75); Robusto Grande, at 5 1/2 by 52 ($9.50); and Gran Cónsul, 4 3/4 by 60 ($10.00). Fans of the brand may recall that the Robusto Grande vitola earned the No. 20 spot on Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 Cigars of 2005.

Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Gran Reserva is rolled in Nicaragua at the Fabrica Joya de Nicaragua S.A. factory.
