J.C. Newman Cigar Co. announced the coming of The American three years ago, and now the brand is hitting retailers this week and early next.

“I am incredibly excited that we can share The American with more of our retail partners across the United States,” Drew Newman, general counsel for J.C. Newman told Cigar Aficionado. While the brand officially debuted on a limited basis earlier this year in Florida, it's now being released to around 100 stores.

Conceived to be a true American puro, the cigars are made from a Florida wrapper, a Connecticut Broadleaf binder and a filler blend of Connecticut Habano and Pennsylvania Broadleaf. In keeping with the theme, the boxes, labels and even the cellophane are made in the U.S. as well.

The line is available in four sizes: Churchill, measuring 7 inches by 47 ring gauge ($18.00); Torpedo, 6 1/8 by 52 ($19.50); Toro, 6 by 54 ($18.50); and Robusto, 4 1/2 by 50 ($16.00).

The American comes in 20-count boxes and is made at J.C. Newman’s Florida-based El Reloj factory, located in Tampa’s Ybor City. Inside each box includes an informational booklet introducing the American producers (also made using American paper and inks).

“Presently, we are working hard to restore El Reloj, our 109-year-old cigar factory in Tampa.” Newman says. “When we finish this restoration project early next year, we will have a new cigar museum, rolling room, guided tours, a rolling and blending school and a factory store. We hope that cigar aficionados from around the world will come visit us and see firsthand how we proudly roll The American.”
