A new Nicaraguan H. Upmann is coming to market next month and it’s going to be lighter in body than its predecessors. The line is called H. Upmann Nicaragua by AJ Fernandez Sunrise, and it’s made by A.J. Fernandez at his factory in Estelí in collaboration with Rafael Nodal, vice president of product capability for Tabacalera USA, which owns the H. Upmann trademark for U.S. distribution.

H. Upmann

Sunrise will be the third regular-production H. Upmann brand that Fernandez makes for Tabacalera USA, following the H. Upmann Nicaragua by AJ Fernandez, which debuted in 2017 and the H. Upmann Nicaragua by AJ Fernandez Heritage in 2021. With its Ecuador Connecticut-seed wrapper and Nicaraguan blend, Sunrise is the mildest of the three, but isn’t billed as a mild cigar. According to Nodal, it’s medium in body and is not a typical Connecticut cigar. All the tobaccos are grown, fermented and aged by Fernandez.

If things go as planned, the new line will be on display at the upcoming PCA trade show in New Orleans next month and ship immediately afterward. Sunrise comes packaged in boxes of 20 and is offered in four sizes: Robusto, measuring 5 inches by 52 ring gauge ($12.99); Toro, at 6 by 54 ($13.75); Churchill, at 7 by 50 ($14.25); and a 6-by-60 Magnum ($14.50).

“The new Sunrise expands our dream of developing a brand with a choice for every moment of the day,” Nodal says. “When A.J. Fernandez and I created the original H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez in 2017, we knew it was going to be the pillar on which we would build an affordable, everyday cigar. And from the beginning, we envisioned eventually offering a full range of expressions suited for every moment of the day.”
