Golfing Quarter Zips

Fall is an exceptional time to play golf. The blazing heat of summer has succumbed to the cooler days of autumn. However, there will be times when it’s just a little too cold for your short-sleeved golf shirt. That’s when the quarter zip comes in quite handy.

As the name suggests, it’s a pullover with a truncated zipper that runs a quarter of the way down the chest from the neck. The finest ones are extremely lightweight for an easy swing, but have a surprising effect against the chill. You adjust the zipper to the temperature. On really cold days, just throw a vest over the quarter zip as modern fabrics are thin enough to layer without bulk.

Johnnie-O’s Sully (shown left and center) is its best-selling quarter zip, a more traditional model that’s 65 percent cotton and 35 percent man-made fibers. Extremely soft and supple with plenty of give, it comes in a host of colors, has a traditional leather tab puller and a banded waist. A contrasting inside color gives it pop. The Johnnie-O logo of a man with a longboard is on the back of the neck. You could easily go right from the course to the clubhouse or a restaurant in this number, which retails for $138.

The company’s Jamie (right) is made entirely from man-made fibers (heavy on the nylon) with a sleeker, thinner feel than the Sully. It has a jacquard weave to add some texture and comes in three colors. It sells for $158.

G/Fore, which focuses on modern luxury with a youthful, whimsical feel, has several models, including the Brushed Back Tech Quarter Zip, which is made of lightweight, technical fabric (89 percent polyester, 11 percent Spandex) with the signature G/Fore pink slip on the back of the collar. (Available in five colors, $155.)

The minimalist and sleek Tech Mélange Raglan Quarter Zip Pullover features Italian-made fabric (86 percent polyamide, 14 percent elastane), raglan sleeves, built-in UV protection and a large G/Fore logo on the back. (Three colors, $155.)

The lightweight fabrics are also ideal for golf trips as they easily fit in your bag. Now if they could only help with your sand game.
