Montecristo Open, a subset of Cuba’s famed Montecristo brand, just got a new size. The Montecristo Open Slam was unveiled last night at the opening party of Cuba’s Habanos Festival. It’s the first addition to the Montecristo Open line, which previously had four sizes. There is no ship date for the new cigars, and typically it takes many months or more for cigars teased at the festival to make their way to the retail chain.

The cigar’s dimensions are unusual: it’s a 52 ring gauge by 142 mm in length, which works out to about 5 3/5 inches long. (Other sources have called it 5 5/8 inches long, which works out closer to 143 millimeters.) Cuba says the Slam is unique to the Habanos portfolio. There is no word yet on pricing. Habanos released box shots of the Slams with 20 cigars in each, but also said that the cigars would also come in packs containing 15 cigars.

Montecristo Open is a relatively new line in the world of Cuban cigars, created in 2009. After a preview at the February 2009 Habanos Festival, the cigars made a quick move to world markets, shipping in June of that year. Two of the brand’s inaugural four sizes, (Eagle and Regata) were new to the world of Cuban cigars. Cigars in the Open line were first marketed by Habanos to be “enjoyed al fresco,” with emphasis on the outdoor sporting life.

The cigars have performed well in blind reviews in Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider, with scores between 88 and 93 points in our taste tests.
