Casa Turrent 1880 to Ship in Four Varieties
The first family of Mexican tobacco is adding four new blends to its namesake Casa Turrent 1880 Series, and the new cigars should be shipping to retailers the first week of June.
The Turrents, known for their prolific leaf-growing operation in Mexico, are also the producers and distributors of the Casa Turrent line of cigars, which are made in Mexico at the Casa Turrent factory.
While the Casa Turrent 1880 Series is made in only one size—6 1/2 inches by 55 ring gauge—it’s offered in four different blends and wrapper types: Claro, Colorado, Oscuro and Maduro. They come in 10-count boxes and will retail for $20 per cigar.
Although not limited-edition cigars, they are limited production with only one pair of rollers assigned to each blend. According to brand owner Alejandro Turrent, the factory will only produce 5,000 of each variety per month.
Lightest of the four, the Claro consists of a Mexican Habano Criollo San Andrés claro wrapper with a Mexican Negro San Andrés binder and a mix of Mexican and Dominican filler.
The Colorado is a bit darker and stronger with its Mexican Negro San Andrés colorado cover leaf around a Mexican Habano Criollo San Andrés binder and Mexican filler.
Darker and stronger than the Colorado, the Oscuro consists entirely of Mexican Habano Criollo San Andrés tobaccos, except for the Negro San Andrés binder.
The Maduro, which is darkest and most full bodied of the series, combines a near-black Negro San Andrés maduro wrapper with Habano Criollo San Andrés binder and filler tobacco from Nicaragua and Mexico.
Naturally, all the Mexican tobaccos in these blends were grown by the Turrent family. Turrent told Cigar Aficionado that the wrappers were aged five years and the binder and filler tobaccos were aged between 10 and 12 years.
The packaging commemorates the family’s heritage in tobacco with Art Nouveau-inspired motifs and a collection of historical family photographs adorning the inner lid of the cigar box.
The original release of 1880 will remain on the market, but will be rebranded as Casa Turrent 1880 Edición Limitada.
