Though a bit behind schedule, a new trio of American-made cigars from J.C. Newman pays homage to one of the company’s historic brands. Called Angel Cuesta, the limited-production cigars were on display at the PCA trade show last summer and slated for release last fall. Now that the cigars are ready, the first 75 boxes of Angel Cuesta begin shipping tomorrow, but are only available to members of the Tobacconists’ Association of America. The brand’s broader release starts in May.

The Angel Cuesta brand dates back to Tampa about a century ago and is named after Angel Cuesta, one of the founders of the Cuesta-Rey cigar brand. According to the company history, Angel Cuesta was the official cigar brand for King Alfonso XIII of Spain, who reigned from 1886 to 1931.

Angel Cuesta is offered in three sizes: Doble Robusto, measuring 5 1/2 inches by 56 ring gauge; Doble Toro, at 6 1/4 by 52; and the double-tapered Salomones, at 7 1/4 by 57. The cigars have suggested retail prices ranging between $18 to $22.

Topped with a pigtail cap, the cigars are rolled in The American Room at J.C. Newman’s El Reloj factory, located on the top floor at the company’s headquarters in Tampa. Other than the Ecuador Havana Rosado wrapper, the company is not disclosing details about the blend, which J.C. Newman says is medium in body.

Production is limited to 1,500 boxes of 20 cigars per annual release, or 500 boxes of each size.

Angel Cuesta cigars are also available for purchase to those who visit the El Reloj factory.
