The iconic Romeo y Julieta brand turns 150 years old this year, and Altadis U.S.A., owners of the U.S. trademark, has turned to some of the industry’s top tobacco growers for the celebratory smokes. Appropriately called the Romeo y Julieta 150th Anniversary, the cigar is made with a composition that the company calls a “Hall of Fame blend.”

“We sourced tobaccos from our close partners specifically for this project,” says Rafael Nodal, vice president of product capability for Altadis U.S.A. “The wrapper is an Ecuadoran Sumatra grown and fermented by A.J. Fernandez. The binder, a San Andrés, comes from our partners, the Turrent family. For the fillers, we used Peruvian and Honduran tobacco grown by our partners, the Plasencia family. And the Dominican filler tobacco was grown by our long-term partners José Mendez & Co.

The cigars are made in the Dominican Republic at the company’s signature cigar factory, Tabacalera de Garcia, and come in three sizes: Balconet, measuring 6 inches by 54 ring gauge ($27); Prologue, 5 by 50 ($25) and Cresecendo, 7 by 50 ($28). All sizes are presented in decorative 16-count boxes made especially for this release.

Those attending the ProCigar Festival in the Dominican Republic this month will be among the first to see these commemorative cigars. Next, the new Romeos will be on display at the PCA trade show in New Orleans in April, before shipping immediately after the convention concludes.
