A Rosy Romeo Returns For The Kentucky Derby
This year marks the 152nd “Run for the Roses” in Louisville, Kentucky, and Altadis U.S.A. will be offering another commemorative Romeo y Julieta cigar as part of the pageantry. It comes in a collector’s coffin and is slated for sale at Churchill Downs during Derby week, but it’s also shipping nationwide for those who can’t make it to the races.
The Romeo y Julieta 152nd Kentucky Derby is an all-Nicaraguan cigar made at Tabacos de Oriente, the factory in Danlí, Honduras, owned by the Plasencia family. At 6 inches by 52 ring gauge, this limited-edition Toro will retail for $30 in its coffin during all of Derby week, which lasts from April 25 to May 2, but Romeo fans can get it early for $25 (without the coffin) at their local retailer. It’s expected to ship nationally ahead of the races in mid-April.
Altadis U.S.A. references the Derby in the packaging design, as the gold details and floral artwork on the bands and boxes evoke the blanket of red roses traditionally draped over the winning thoroughbred. The 152nd Kentucky Derby marks the third time Altadis has created a Derby cigar.
“This is a strategic effort to strengthen our presence at one of the most prestigious events in the country,” says Oliver Hyams, vice president of marketing at Altadis U.S.A. “It allows us to connect our brands with a highly engaged audience.”
