A Macanudo With A Vintage Broadleaf Wrapper
Following up on 2021’s Macanudo Vintage 2010, General Cigar Co. has released another vintage Macanudo, this time with a darker, maduro wrapper. The Vintage Maduro 2013 showcases a Connecticut broadleaf cover leaf that General says was harvested that same year. The cigars began shipping to retailers late last week.
According to the company, 2013 was a particularly ideal year for broadleaf tobacco in the Connecticut River Valley, where the wrappers of these Macanudos were cultivated. The combination of temperature, rainfall and humidity made for optimal growing conditions.
“The growing season in 2013 was one of the best I’ve ever seen,” says Ernest Gocaj, who oversees the growing operations in Connecticut for General Cigar. “The crop was exceptional at harvest, which meant that we had to be obsessive when it came to monitoring the tobacco during the eight-week curing process.”
The Honduran binder holds together a filler blend of Dominican Piloto Cubano, Brazilian Mata Fina and Nicaraguan tobacco from Jalapa.
Macanudo Vintage Maduro 2013 comes in 20-count boxes and is available in the following sizes: Robusto, measuring 5 inches by 50 ring gauge, ($11.99); Toro Grande, 6 by 54 ($12.99); and Churchill, 7 by 49 ($13.29). They’re made in the Dominican Republic at the General Cigar Dominicana factory.
The Macanudo Vintage line has existed for decades with previous wrapper vintages including 1988, 1993 and 2000, which General released in 2006. In 2010, General sold its first Macanudo Vintage Maduro, which had a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper dated from 1997.
