Peter James Discontinuing Leather Travel Humidors, Few Still Remain
For the past 13 years, accessories manufacturer Peter James Co. has been most known for its handmade leather travel humidors. But the company recently announced it will be officially retiring the line. A few, however, still remain available for purchase.
The Alcantara Black Label Carry Humidors are handmade in Italy with Italian leather. According to the company, each piece takes more than 60 hours to make by hand, and is done so by artisans who each have a minimum of 40 years of experience in leatherworking.
The travel humidors are available in four different finishes: Crimson Noir Elegance (black leather exterior, crimson interior), Golden Olive Reverie (olive-colored leather exterior, golden yellow interior), Coastal Breeze Charm (steel blue leather exterior, grey interior) and Maritime Mocha Mélange (mocha leather exterior, turquoise interior). Inside, each model has a colored, velvet interior with specific leather compartments for your cigars, a lighter, a cutter and a Boveda pack to maintain proper humidity levels. Each cigar holder can hold four to seven smokes, up to 60 ring gauge and eight inches in length. The travel humidors themselves are a bit larger than your typical cigar case, almost like a small shaving kit.
The discontinuation, according to Peter James Co., is fueled by rising costs in materials and labor. "This decision comes with mixed emotions for us all," says John Laurendi, founder of Peter James Co. "Rather than compromise on quality, we’ve made the difficult but necessary choice to close this chapter with integrity and retire the Peter James Cigar EDC line."
There were a few dozen travel humidors left for purchase as this article was written, and once these are sold, the line will be officially discontinued. Laurendi says the move represents new beginnings rather than an ending. "We look forward to introducing new concepts that continue to elevate the cigar and luxury lifestyle experience," he says.
The remaining inventory is available to buy now on the company’s website, and they’re currently listed at a discounted price of $945, down from $1,480.
The Peter James website now only has three categories of items for sale, including the soon-to-be discontinued cigar cases. In the past, the company has also sold cigar lighters, which no longer appear on the company's website. When asked about the line of Peter James lighters, Laurendi told Cigar Aficionado: "At this time, we’re currently focused on offering our HydroLock, select furniture pieces, and our cigar collection." According to Laurendi, there’s “a larger vision in motion,” so more details are expected to be announced in the future.
