Overlook Lounge, Wynn Las Vegas
Las Vegas has defiantly remained a cigar lover’s city, and recently this has quietly extended to Wynn Las Vegas, which has been upping its game with renovations and expansions. Over the past two years, the posh resort redid the adult beverage programs at all 34 venues under its roof. One of the biggest changes was transforming the space formerly known as Parasol Up into the new, cigar-friendly Overlook Lounge. The name is fitting because the circular lounge is perched on the edge of the casino floor and looks out in different directions over the gaming action, into the foliage of the Wynn Conservatory, and down to the Lake of Dreams.
Overlook is easily the most opulent lounge among many in the mega-resort, with design inspired by the Regency period, from the palm frond murals on the ceiling overhead to the multi-layer drapery of rich fabrics pouring down the walls to create an exotic tented feeling. Wooden chairs are upholstered in velvet cushioning and flank polished burlwood round tables adorned with cut crystal lamps. Seating is grouped into intimate little enclaves, all of which surround the center bar like the rings of Saturn. Ornate chandeliers hang from the ceiling, and all of the artwork, including fantastical mythologically inspired animal sculptures, were specially commissioned for the space.
The Overlook is now Wynn’s most complete cigar bar. (The B Bar at the Baccarat area usually has a small selection for sale, and the Tower Suites Bar, in the lobby of the Wynn Tower Suites boutique hotel, also allows cigar smoking. There is also a direct pedestrian bridge from Wynn to the freestanding Davidoff Cigar Bar across the street.) The Overlook Lounge is the main event for cigar lovers, especially those who don’t bring their own, and appreciate a great cocktail. It is also open very late, and has an extensive new craft drink program with signature tipples all referencing famous figures in film, fashion, philosophy or mythology. Borrowing a page from molecular gastronomy, several cocktails add flavor via a spritz from an atomizer, finishing the drink off with “edible perfume.” For example, the Hudson uses El Tesoro Tequila, grapefruit liqueur, and thyme, then gets spritzed with a mixture of jasmine, rose, vanilla and smoke. One of the most popular choices is the Overlook’s take on the Old Fashioned, the Gable, with Angel’s Envy Port Barrel Finished Bourbon, St. George Spiced Pear liqueur and raisin cinnamon syrup.
The cigar list at Overlook is succinct, generally with no more than ten selections, but these span many different brands, with no more than one offering from each, and include standards such as Arturo Fuente, Ashton, Davidoff, Montecristo, Rocky Patel Decade and Romeo y Julieta. Prices range from around $23 for a Romeo y Julieta to $62 for a high-end Davidoff.
Wynn’s chief creative officer described Overlook as a cocoon within a Faberge egg, offering “psychological and sensorial removal from the enormity of the casino.” The drinks and fine cigars don’t hurt either.
