New Ashtrays By J.C. Newman Have Vintage Look
J.C. Newman Cigar Co. has been around for 127 years, so it makes sense that the company has an appreciation for the old school. It recently released a new ceramic ashtray with a very old-school look and feel, one modeled after a legendary New York City nightclub.
The Vintage Ashtray is designed to look much like the ashtrays found on the tables of Manhattan’s swank Stork Club, which was open from 1929 to 1965.
“The Stork Club was a place my grandparents, Stanford and Elaine Newman, frequented in New York,” said Drew Newman of J.C. Newman. “Every time celebrities were photographed at the Stork Club, the famous Stork Club ashtray was on the table in front of them.”
Like the original, the Vintage Ashtrays echo the last century with the same bone white, embossed lettering on glossy black enamel. The font is big, slightly rounded and inviting. The big difference here is the size. Stork Club ashtrays were far smaller than the new Vintage Ashtray, as the primary smoke of choice at the Stork Club was a cigarette. J.C. Newman made these reproduction ashtrays far larger—10 inches in diameter, the size of a dinner plate—designed to easily hold four large, modern-day cigars. The new ashtrays read: “J.C. NEWMAN CIGAR CO., TAMPA, FLA., 1895.”
The ashtrays are handcrafted and hand-painted in China, with a suggested retail price of $50.
