If you miss the discontinued Las Mareas line from Crowned Heads, it’s come back in the form of a new brand called Moonflower—sort of. According to Jon Huber, co-owner of Crowned Heads, Moonflower is an analog of Las Mareas, echoing the older blend with some of the same tobaccos, especially the Corojo-seed wrapper cultivated in Nicaragua’s Namanji region by the Garcia family of My Father Cigars

“The blend inspiration for Moonflower was definitely the Las Mareas brand that we collaborated on with My Father Cigars a decade ago,” Huber tells Cigar Aficionado. “We took the Mareas blend and modded it slightly to provide a more rich, rounder flavor profile. However, the main attributes remain the same, which is that all of the tobaccos used are 100 percent Garcia-grown tobaccos, and all are from Nicaragua.”

Under the Corojo wrapper are two binder leaves—one from Jalapa, the other from Estelí—and a filler blend of tobacco from Estelí, Jalapa and Condega.

Moonflower is produced in Nicaragua at the My Father Cigars S.A. factory and comes in three sizes, all packaged in 21-count, slide-lid boxes: Corona Gorda measuring 6 inches by 46 ring gauge ($11.95); Robusto, at 5 by 52 ($12.95) and a 6-by-54 Toro ($13.50).

This is Crowned Heads’ first regular-production brand from My Father since 2015. Other lines made by My Father for Crowned Heads include Las Calaveras, Tennessee Waltz and La Imperiosa. Moonflower is named after the night-blooming morning glory flower, and is meant to symbolize the struggle to overcome adversity.
