Registration Opens For 18th ProCigar Festival In The Dominican Republic
Have you ever been to a cigar festival? It’s like being an active participant in a cigar documentary but it’s also a five-day cigar party as well—and if you’re into social media, every moment is very Instagrammable. ProCigar will be holding its 18th Festival next year in the Dominican Republic, and this time, it’s been given a name: “From Soil To Soul.” This immersive celebration of Dominican cigars is scheduled to start on February 15th in La Romana, home of the grand Tabacalera de Garcia factory, and conclude on the 20th in Santiago, the epicenter of the country’s premium cigar industry.
The ProCigar Festival is put on by the Association of Dominican Cigar Manufacturers and includes every major producer of premium Dominican cigars. It’s an interactive week where most cigar companies open up their tobacco fields and factories for guided tours that are both educational and yet relaxed and informal.
The weeklong event is a fairly simple arrangement: tours and field trips in the morning, smoking lunches in the afternoon and cigar dinners in the evening. These are all casual, cultural excursions with Dominican cigars as the central focus. Because there’s such a large social component to the Festival, ProCigar is an ideal opportunity to interact directly with the cigarmakers behind some of your favorite brands.
Meals and transportation are taken care of and every major Dominican cigar company participates, from large operations such as Arturo Fuente, General Cigar, Altadis and Davidoff to mid-size and smaller producers such as Quesada Cigars, La Flor Dominicana, Casa Carrillo, Tabacalera Palma, De Los Reyes and La Aurora. The tour starts at La Romana at the coastal Casa de Campo resort where guests can lounge about or engage in beach activities. Each day closes with a cigar dinner. This portion of the festival ends with a tour of Tabacalera de Garcia, which produces brands such as Romeo y Julieta, Montecristo and H. Upmann.
You can opt to skip the La Romana portion of the tour and go directly to Santiago—the absolute epicenter of the country’s premium cigar industry. Everyone gets a goodie bag full of cigars and other smoking merch upon registration, but cigars are handed out at each day and evening event.
