Angel Oliva Jr., 1935–2026
Angel “Pichi” Oliva Jr., who spent several decades as part of Oliva Tobacco Co., one of the cigar world’s most important cigar tobacco growers and brokers, died on April 30, 2026. He was 91 years old.
Born and raised in Tampa, Florida, Oliva earned a degree in architecture from the University of Florida in 1962 and later served in the United States Army. After starting his professional career in architecture, working on projects including the Tampa International Airport and St. John’s Episcopal School Library, he joined the family cigar tobacco business, Oliva Tobacco Co., in the mid-1970s. He helped grow the company, which was founded by his father Angel Oliva Sr., one of the original members of the Cigar Aficionado Hall of Fame. He retired in 2010 and traveled the world.
In 2005, Angel underwent a lung transplant and as a show of gratitude, he dedicated himself to helping others facing similar journeys. He designed and offered a home—known as “The Butterfly House”—as a place of comfort for transplant patients and their families, and he served on the board of the fundraising initiative “One Breath at a Time” for many years.
Oliva is survived by the mother of his children, Islee Teresa Salinas Oliva, his two daughters, Islee Stella Oliva and Tania Teresa Oliva, and his son, Angel Oliva III, known in the cigar industry as Trey. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Mila Oliva and Angel Oliva IV; his brother, John E. Oliva (John Oliva Sr.); and his nephews, John E. Oliva Jr., Mark A. Oliva and Michael B. Oliva.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Francy M. Oliva, and his parents, Angel and Estela Oliva.
A burial service will be held on May 29 at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Tampa, Florida, at 2:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will follow at the University Club in Tampa from 6 pm to 10 pm.
