2025 Cigar Insider Retailer Survey: The Best-Selling Cigar Sizes In America

Over the last few years, a few premium cigar trends have held strong in the U.S. market: increasing prices, the demand for Nicaraguan smokes and the appetite for thick cigars. When it comes to cigar sizes, the results of our Cigar Insider retailer survey confirm the same thing in 2025 as they did the year before: U.S. cigar smokers prefer toros. They like robustos and grandes as well, but the toro format was the undisputable winner by a very large margin, as 66.2 percent of the retailers polled by Cigar Insider reported the toro as their best-selling size.

Previous Insider polls had robustos as top sellers, but toros have replaced these shorter smokes as the most popular size. At Cigar Insider and Cigar Aficionado, we define toros (which are also known as corona gordas) as any cigar measuring 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 inches long, with ring gauges from 46 to 59.

1. Toro/Corona Gorda  66.2
2. Robusto     16.9
3. Grande 10.8
4. Corona   3.1
5. Lonsdale   1.5
5. Double Corona   1.5

Like the 2024 poll results, the huge demand for toros in 2025 is illustrated by the vast difference between the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in our survey. Robustos came in at a distant second, with only 16.9 percent of retailers naming the size as their most popular. Next is the grande, an ultra-fat cigar named by 10.8 percent of retailers. We define grandes as any non-shaped cigar with a 60 ring gauge or thicker.

Fans of traditional sizes no doubt find themselves a bit disenfranchised at their local cigar stores. Finding sizes like coronas or lonsdales in cigar shop humidors has become a major challenge. Our poll showed that only 3.1 percent named coronas as their top sellers, and only 1.5 pointed to lonsdales. No retailers named figurados, Churchills or petit coronas at all.

The shops polled in our survey range from large cigar emporiums to small boutiques to neighborhood tobacconists, but all are reputable establishments that specialize in premium cigars.
