Connoisseur's Corner: An Impressive "A"
(From the May 2010 issue of Cigar Aficionado) One need not be a seasoned cigar aficionado to look upon an open box of Hoyo de Monterrey Particulares and realize that you are staring at something extraordinary and unusual. The presentation is impressive. Each of the “A”-sized cigars (they stretch to a massive 9 1/4 inches long, with a substantial ring gauge of 47) are packed in individual wooden boxes, five of which come in each box of cigars. But comely packaging can only dress up a smoke. The cigars inside deliver, even after 24 years of age. These supersized Hoyos are classic, near perfect smokes that take a short time to warm up and blossom into a subtle and distinctive smoking experience. The Hoyo was one of two classics we found in this tasting, the other being a Ramon Allones entering its fourth decade.
This cigar has a velvet smoothness with chocolate and mild honey notes. While the draw started a bit firm, it lightened up in minutes to become a smooth, perfect smoke. Clearly, a distinctive cigar. —Marvin R. Shaken
This panetela has sweet and chocolate aromas and flavors that turn soft and rich. This long, thin cigar has such a beautiful balance and density on the palate. So much going on. —James Suckling
This cigar has aged nicely, with a solid lingering finish of cedar notes. On the palate, there is a light hint of nutmeg. Always elegant, it still is. —Gordon Mott
