Elasticity, sturdiness and combustibility. The binder, banda in Spanish, is the leaf that's rolled around the filler leaves, or bunch. Therefore, it must be elastic and supple enough to stretch around the bunch, sturdy enough to secure it and combustible enough to ensure a slow, even burn.
Often, the leaves that become binders were grown to be wrappers but were rejected for aesthetic reasons during the sorting process.
Many cigars are rolled with one binder leaf, while others are created using two binder leaves.
