La Aurora Blends Tradition with Modernity for Highly-Rated Family Creed Series
La Aurora, the oldest premium cigarmaker in the Dominican Republic, has created a new cigar line inspired by the creed of the company’s founders, the León family. Called La Aurora Family Creed Fuerte Sol, the cigar is meant to honor while appealing to the evolving tastes of modern cigar connoisseurs. The brand is the first release in a planned four-part series. Family Creed Fuerte Sol arrived on store shelves last year. The Robusto size recently earned a spot on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of the Year list.
Meaning “strong sun” in Spanish, Fuerte Sol takes its name from the opening words of the León family creed. The creed, in part, reads: “We are a proud family of rural origin, forged with persistent work under a strong sun.” Concepts from the creed, including the powerful sun and the hardworking resilience of the León family, are mirrored in the cigar’s hearty profile. A medium-to-full bodied cigar with a four-country tobacco blend, Fuerte Sol was designed for the contemporary cigar enthusiast who appreciates a bold smoking profile and an intriguing tobacco blend.
Rolled with a rich Mexican San Andrés wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder, and a filler mix of Dominican, Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania broadleaf tobaccos, Fuerte Sol comes in 20-count boxes and is offered in three box-pressed sizes: Robusto, measuring 5 inches by 50 ring gauge; Toro, at 5 3/4 by 54; and Gran Toro, 6 by 58. Priced $15.50 to $18.50, the cigars are rolled at the La Aurora S.A. factory in the Dominican Republic.
La Aurora describes Fuerte Sol as a sweet and creamy smoke that shows notes of spicy cedar, cocoa and toasted nuts, along with touches of oak and citrus.
A balance of tradition and modernity, Fuerte Sol is a celebration of the past, present and future of La Aurora and the León family. Founded by Eduardo León Jimenes in 1903, La Aurora started as a small cigar factory in Guazumal in the Dominican Republic. More than 120 years later, the company is owned by Jimenes’ grandson Guillermo León. His daughters, Michelle and Daniela, are now part of the business, marking the fourth generation of León family members keeping La Aurora’s cigarmaking tradition alive.
La Aurora Fuerte Sol has performed well in both Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider blind taste tests. In a recent Cigar Insider vertical brand tasting, the scored 93 points. The Gran Toro and Toro sizes earned 92 points and 91 points, respectively. In a separate blind tasting, the Robusto vitola earned placement on Cigar Aficionado’s coveted Top 25 Cigars of the Year list, being named the No. 24 Cigar of 2025.
