Iowa Senator Signs On To Cigar Exemption Bill
Support for a Senate bill that aims to remove the FDA's jurisdiction over the cigar industry continues to grow as an Iowa senator announced this week that she is signing on.
Sen. Joni Ernst, (R-IA), became the 21st U.S. Senator to co-sponsor S. 294, also known as the Traditional Cigar Manufacturing and Small Business Jobs Preservation Act.
The bill, which was originally introduced by Florida Sens. Bill Nelson (D) and Marco Rubio (R), seeks to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to exempt traditional large and premium cigars from regulation by the FDA. Additionally, the bill includes language that wouldn’t allow the government agency to charge user fees on large and premium cigars.
S. 294 is a companion bill to H.R. 564, a measure originally introduced by U.S. Representative Bill Posey (R-FL) that currently has 142 co-sponsors.
