A Great Actor—And So Much More
The man on our cover should not be a stranger to any reader of Cigar Aficionado. This is the second time Liev Schreiber has been the face of our magazine (the last time was in December, 2013). You probably know him from “Ray Donovan,” the phenomenal Showtime series about a tough-as-nails Hollywood fixer, which was one of our favorite shows. Or perhaps you recognize him from one of his many films, such as The Manchurian Candidate, Spotlight or Asteroid City. If you’re a theatergoer, you may know him from the stage, as he’s a Tony award winner and quite gifted at performing live. His performances are nuanced, mesmerizing and consistently entertaining.
But there’s more to Liev Schreiber than remarkable acting. Schreiber is a man who cares and who gives back. In March 2022, he cofounded BlueCheck Ukraine, a charity aimed at helping the people of the Ukraine in their struggle against the invading army of Russia. The war has claimed the lives of many innocents in Ukraine, and caused immense suffering, suffering that is hard for most of us to fully understand, given that we are lucky enough to know lives of peace. The organization has provided more than $4 million in much-needed aid, protecting children, sheltering the elderly, providing warmth and trying to ease the suffering in this war-torn country. It’s a noble cause.
Schreiber is a fascinating man doing serious things. And he has an informed, enlightened view of the world that we are happy to share with all of you. His profile begins on page 42.
That cover story is just one part of this issue. We will take you to Pinehurst, the impressive, cigar-friendly golf resort in North Carolina. It seems to get better every year, with courses for every skill level and amenities that everyone can enjoy. You’ll find that report on page 52. If you’re a car buff, we have a pictorial of the best car shows in the United States, from California to Newport, Rhode Island (page 60). We look at a new trend in the spirits world involving whiskeys made with toasted oak barrels (page 69), imparting a subtle flavor that will fill out your collection. And we sit down for a Q&A with one of the world’s most innovative cigarmakers, Litto Gomez, the man who makes La Flor Dominicana cigars. Gomez has been making cigars for 30 years, and offers tremendous insight into his success. You can read his interview on page 77, and we invite you to go beyond our pages, and watch the complete video interview of Gomez on our website, cigaraficionado.com.
